SCAN, the international photography festival organised by the Tarragona City Council has opened the call for entries for Talent Latent 2022, an event for creators from all over the world who view photography as an essential and preferred means of expression. The projects and artists selected in the call for entries will be part of the Talent Latent exhibition to be held in Tarragona from 18 November 2022 to 8 January 2023.
Talent Latent was created in 2008 within the framework of the SCAN Tarragona festival. Since the first event in 2008, drawing from a range of curatorial projects, more than 80 photographers from all over the world have exhibited their works in the eight Talent Latent events held in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020.
However, the world has changed a lot since the first Talent Latent. Our pace of life has accelerated exponentially and society as a whole has been transformed. High-speed internet, social networks, globalisation, economic crises, increased inequality and pollution, climate change, the power of the media, the discrediting of democracy, war, pandemics and the unknown metaverse have created a scenario in which our world is an ineffable and uncertain place in recent years.
SCAN is a festival that aims to provide opportunities to emerging creators of all kinds, without exception, from every corner of the world, by instilling a socially responsible culture centred on the aesthetics of images and their symbolism. The changing scenario described above has led the festival, for the first time, to open the call for entries to artists of all kinds for this year’s Talent Latent. Artists are asked to submit portfolios based on the central theme of this year’s festival: war.
Deadline for submission of projects
11:59 p.m., 2 September 2022
Theme of projects
All entries must address the theme of war and its economic, political, social, technological, scientific, propagandistic, historical, territorial, etc. motivations, characteristics and consequences from any point of view (documentary and/or artistic).
Who can take part?
Artists over the age of 18 of any nationality.
What kind of project can be presented?
SCAN aims to promote visual narratives among new creators. In this spirit, artists may submit a primarily photographic series that tells a story related to the theme of the event. Projects and series in which photography is interwoven with creative language of a textual or audiovisual nature will also be accepted.
Apart from the aesthetic criteria, the conceptual integrity of the project, the level of knowledge the author demonstrates on the subject, and the author’s willingness to reflect critically will be evaluated.
How to submit a project registration form
The project must be submitted with the registration form.
The form must include:
– personal contact details;
– a short biography;
– the title of the project or photographic series;
– a brief explanation (250 words);
– a zip file of no more than 20 MB and 15 photographs in the same series. The digital photographs must be at least 2,000 pixels on the longest side, must be in .jpg format, and must have an embedded Adobe RGB (1998) or sRGB colour profile. If they wish, artists may include a PDF with complementary information to facilitate the jury’s understanding of the project.
Projects will be accepted in Catalan, Spanish or English.
The jury and selection process
Sema D’Acosta, independent curator, researcher and art critic, will select the nine projects and artists that will take part in the Talent Latent exhibition. His decision will be final.
When will selected artists be informed of the jury’s decision?
The festival organisers will contact the artists selected. The final list of artists participating in Talent Latent will be published on the SCAN festival website at the end of September 2022.
Benefits and obligations of selected artists
SCAN will invite the artists participating in Talent Latent to attend the festival’s opening and will provide them with accommodation in a hotel in Tarragona (the cost of accommodation will be covered by the festival). Travel expenses will be borne by participants.
The selected works and artists will be given visibility and promoted through the festival’s digital channels (SCAN website and social networks).
Artists will receive the corresponding copyright and exhibition fees.
A Latent Talent catalog will be published.
Reproduction of works for the Talent Latent exhibition
SCAN will ask selected artists for photographic originals to make prints. Originals should be submitted in digital format in the highest possible quality and pixel size.
SCAN will make the photographic prints in a trusted professional lab with high-quality inkjet printers.
Decisions regarding the reproduction of prints, their number, size and finish as well as their use in the exhibition spaces will be made by SCAN’s curatorial team, although the artists’ wishes will be taken into account if indicated in the project dossier. The aim will be to make the best possible exhibition with the resources available to the organisation.
If the artist has not informed SCAN of their wish to have any copies made returned to them prior to the end of the festival, the copies will be destroyed. If the artist wishes to have the copies returned to them, the cost of sending them will be borne by the artist.
Payment for participating artists
Each artist exhibiting their work at Talent Latent will receive a one-time payment of €400 including taxes (€400 for copyright). Artists must submit a proforma invoice including the details provided by SCAN so the Tarragona City Council can effect payment.
Copyright and communication rights
Artists must exclusively own all the rights to their work.
The creators of the works exhibited will hold the copyright and communication rights for their works, and will temporarily cede the right of public communication to SCAN in order to promote the event through official festival channels, the press, and the creation of a publication-catalogue.
