About SCAN

SCAN Tarragona is an international photography festival organised by the Tarragona City Council in collaboration with the Government of Catalonia’s Ministry of Culture. It also benefits from the valued support of the Provincial Government of Tarragona, the Port of Tarragona, Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and an extensive network of local public and private entities.

The first two festivals were held in 2008 and 2009 under the direction of Mariona Fernández with the support of numerous renowned experts. The aim of the festival was to provide a forum for examination and creation related to new photography. In this context, several initiatives gained importance in those early years, such as the Talent Latent, exhibition, set up within the framework of the festival as a programme intended specifically to disseminate the work of young artists, the Second Catalan Photography Conference and the symposium Instantáneas de la Teoría de la Fotografía (Snapshots of the Theory of Photography).

SCAN has been held every two years since 2010. The Forvm Foundation, led by David Balsells and Chantal Grande, took over the direction of SCAN and Josep Rigol the general coordination of the festival . Talent Latent was initially established and the first professional Full Contact conference for emerging artists and representatives of the art world took place in 2012. The two initiatives became the cornerstones of SCAN until 2018. In the last festival, held in 2020, Chantal Grande and Jesús Vilamajó curated the SCAN Review: a scaled-down version adapted to the realities of COVID-19

Now we are preparing for the 2022 SCAN Festival, the ninth iteration of the festival to date, and we are doing this unflinchingly from the perspective of our active and responsible culture and in the context of a society shaken by new realities: the war in Ukraine, the pandemic, economic crises, increasing inequality, the destruction of the environment, and the list goes on. Of course, we cannot remain indifferent to all this. And we feel our task is all the more vital now, since we know with certainty that the knowledge we acquire as individuals and as a society is inevitably conveyed through the mediation of (always interest-driven) images disseminated and promoted by the media and social networks.

By persistently pushing photography and its hybridisation with other disciplines to explore new forms of expression on boundless and infinite terrain, the terrain of art, SCAN invites photographers and audiences to promote and embrace a visual culture that sees itself, above all, as a pluralistic platform open to everyone, stimulating both transformative imagination and critical reflection.
