SCAN 09 begins

Current view of the Tarragona’s Mercat Central

Development of SCAN 09

For ten days, from 7 to 17 May, you will be able to enjoy various events which will take place within the arena of the festival at different venues within the city of Tarragona. SCAN 09 continues with the twin focus created in 2008, exploring the theoretical side of the image as well as the diffusion of work by artists at the beginning of their photographic careers.

The Symposium and the Dialogue provide a space in which to generate discussion in a language which, in the last century, has greatly contributed towards changing our concepts of photography. The International Workshops and the creation of a research grant, on the other hand, will provide the pedagogical aspect of the festival.

Talent Latent

The second main thrust of SCAN 09 materialises in the Talent Latent project, which provides a platform for new artists and hopes to become an important source of information for professionals in the world of the photographic image.

Commissioned by Cristina Zelich, in the present edition the selected works are by Alejandro Chaskielberg (Argentina), Laura Cuch (Spain), Amaury da Cunha (France), Lucia Ganieva (Russia), Ignacio García Gómez del Valle (Spain), Tomas van Houtryve (USA), Sirio Magnabosco (Italy), Javier Marquerie Thomas (Spain), Rafal Milach (Poland), Gemma Pardo (Spain), Grégoire Pujade-Lauraine (France), Ángel de la Rubia (Spain), Ahmet Unver (Sweden) and Jorge Yeregui (Spain). The talent of the artists will remain latent until 7 May, when the exhibition of their work will open the second edition of the SCAN photographic festival.

The show can be seen at Tarragona's Mercat Central (Corsini square), until 5 July. On 2 October, Talent Latent will open at Arts Santa Mònica de Barcelona (La Rambla, 7), as part of their quarterly programme dedicated to the photographic image. This will mark the beginning of their international journey to different museums and centres around the world. You can visit the 2008 edition of Talent Latent, which will be shown at various venues throughout Catalonia during 2009 and the beginning of 2010. On our website you will find more information about these travelling venues, part of the 'Visual Arts on Tour' project initiated by the General Directorate of Cultural Cooperation.

Talent Latent has received the participation of 90 'satellites', a group of professionals spread worldwide  who collaborate with SCAN, providing contact with artists in the initial stages of their career. These 'satellites' have this year suggested a total of 223 artists, 14 of whom now form part of the 2009 Talent Latent project. The rest make up a database which will be sent out to all participating satellites, and will be at the disposal of any professionals who may be interested. This tool will permit the achievement of one of Talent Latent's principal objectives: to become a platform aiming at making this fresh new talent visible.
